2013 Early On Colloquium: Enhancing the Practicum Experience

Featuring: Susan P. Maude, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Iowa State University. Susan is the past president of the Division for Early Childhood of the Council for Exceptional Children (DEC) and has assisted national and state efforts in the evaluation of innovative professional development approaches, including crosswalks and initiatives of NAEYC. Susan is the author of numerous articles and book chapters on personnel preparation for inclusive early childhood education and early intervention.

Special Guest:  Mary Jane Brotherson, Ph.D., Professor, Iowa State University.  Mary Jane has contributed to the science and practice of professional development in early childhood special education and early intervention.  Mary Jane has worked has worked to enhance the capacities of universities and state systems to evaluate how practitioners interact with and support young children with disabilities and their families.  Mary Jane has publications in the Journal of Early Intervention, Topics in Early Childhood Special Education, and Children's Health Care.

Participants will:

  • Understand new evidence-based practices that are changing the landscape for personnel development.
  • Explore strategies to bring in and seek out practicum experiences that support diverse family-centered practices in early intervention.
  • Learn how to design and respond to real life "dilemmas" that students and faculty face in their practica.
  • Obtain resources that support faculty to infuse reflection, culture, language, and diversity in their teaching.
  • Share various ways to infuse the family voice into course content and assignments.

There will be a variety of break out sessions in the afternoon.  This event is a wonderful opportunity for faculty in early childhood, special education, speech/language pathology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, social work, nursing, and other early intervention disciplines.

Approved by Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative for 4 CE hours.  State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs), will be offered, pending approval.

Applying for Student Discounted Rates:

$30.00 student fee.  Ten (10) scholarships awarded to first 10 students to register.

Students who wish to attend and receive the discounted rate must provide documentation on university letterhead indicating their enrollment at the college or university.
